Sprinkler system troubleshooting: common problems and fixes

Most sprinkler problems come down to a handful of causes. Check these first — and if it's underground or electrical, book a diagnosis so you're not digging blind.

A zone won't turn on

Usually a failed solenoid, a cut or corroded field wire, or a controller station fault. Try running the zone manually at the controller, then at the valve (most have a manual bleed).

Heads won't pop up or spray weakly

Check for a partially closed supply valve, a clogged nozzle or filter, or a broken line elsewhere on the zone bleeding off pressure. Too many heads on one zone also causes weak coverage.

A zone won't shut off

Debris in the valve diaphragm or a failed solenoid can hold a valve open. Shut the irrigation supply and book a repair.

Soggy spot or water bubbling up

A broken lateral, cracked fitting or a head broken at the riser — common after winter or mowing damage.

Controller shows a fault

Often a short in a valve wire. Replacing the controller won't fix a field-wire fault; it needs tracing.
