Watering Restrictions and Water-Wise Irrigation in the GTA
Municipal watering rules change from city to city. Here is how to stay compliant and still keep a healthy lawn.

Rules vary by municipality
Toronto, Peel Region, Halton, York and Durham each set their own outdoor water use guidelines, and several introduce restrictions during declared drought conditions. Common patterns include odd/even address day schedules and prohibitions on daytime watering in peak hours. Always confirm the current rule with your municipality before setting a schedule.
Design your schedule around the rules
- Program automatic start times in the early morning window, which almost every municipality permits
- Use two or three deep cycles per week rather than daily runs, which usually keeps you compliant automatically
- Record your watering days in the controller so an occupant does not run manual cycles on a restricted day
Equipment that keeps you compliant
Rain sensors are required by many jurisdictions and are cheap insurance either way: a sprinkler running during a downpour is the fastest route to a complaint. Smart controllers skip cycles based on local weather data. Pressure-regulated heads stop misting, which is where a large share of visible waste comes from. Drip on garden beds removes those areas from spray restrictions entirely in most bylaws.
Water-wise habits that actually move the needle
- Raise mowing height to 7-8 cm so soil shades itself
- Leave clippings on the lawn
- Aerate compacted clay soil annually so water infiltrates instead of running off
- Accept summer dormancy on low-traffic areas; cool-season grass recovers
If restrictions tighten
A properly zoned system lets you reduce turf watering while keeping trees and shrubs alive on drip. That flexibility is worth designing in from day one.
