The Best Time to Water Your Lawn in Southern Ontario
Watering at the wrong hour wastes water and invites lawn disease. Here is the schedule that works for GTA soil and climate.

Early morning wins, every time
The best watering window in Southern Ontario is 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Wind is calm, temperatures are low, and evaporation losses are minimal. Just as importantly, grass blades dry as the sun rises, which limits fungal disease.
Why evening watering causes problems
Watering after dinner leaves blades wet for eight to ten hours. That is ideal for dollar spot, brown patch and red thread, all common on Kentucky bluegrass and fescue lawns across the GTA.
Why midday watering wastes money
On a 30 degree afternoon with any breeze, a meaningful share of spray never reaches the soil. You pay for water that evaporates.
How much, and how often
- Target roughly 25 mm (1 inch) per week including rainfall
- Deliver it in two or three deep cycles, not daily sprinkles
- Deep, infrequent watering drives roots down and builds drought tolerance
- Clay-heavy GTA soils absorb slowly: use cycle-and-soak, two shorter runs 45 minutes apart, to prevent runoff onto the sidewalk
Adjust by season
- May-June: one or two cycles per week; spring rain does most of the work
- July-August: two or three cycles per week, longer run times
- September-October: taper back as temperatures drop
- Any month: skip after 15 mm or more of rainfall
Verify with a tuna-can test
Place several straight-sided cans across a zone, run it for 15 minutes, and measure. That tells you the zone's real precipitation rate and exposes uneven coverage that no schedule can fix.
